Interview Prep - Handling Anxiety
I was asked recently for advice on how to make sure to succeed in an interview. This was an interesting question as most often people just want to know an easy trick or two, a couple great questions, or maybe “do people still wear suits?” Something quick and easy in order to separate them from the pack, and they are often surprised by the depth that I go into during an Interview Prep Call. You work so hard to get the interview that it can cause natural anxiety to build and build, so how do you make sure you’re going to be at your best?
I do a lot of interview prep calls and a common discussion pertains to helping candidates remain calm, cool, and collected. So, if you feel like you’re the only one whose nerves start to swell at the thought of interviewing, you are not alone. I’ve had individuals tell me that this wasn’t even a job they were really considering or even that excited about, but now that the interview is real, they are a nervous wreck! Interviewing can be daunting and intimidating or a fun and enjoyable experience, but it almost always comes with a level of anxiety. What does it stem from? Well, it’s simple: you want the job. Even a job that you weren’t initially all that interested in? Yes, in part because because there is always a level of mystery and potential: maybe I’ll have a better work life balance. Maybe I make more money. Maybe I’ll have more opportunity for growth. All the unknowns manifest as positive potential that lies within this new opportunity.
Additionally, we don’t know who we are going to be interviewing with or what to expect in the interview. How do you make sure you get the information you need so you can confidently know if this is the right move? How do you develop effective questions? Not only develop, but do you know how many different ways you can ask a question? What is the best way to answer a question? How long should my response be? How do I ever make sure to share what I have to offer while also capturing the necessary information to make sure this is the right move? In this blog, I share many different articles on tips and tricks to help you prepare. If you’re interested in further discussion to tailor this approach to get you ready for an upcoming interview, lets schedule a one on one appointment where I teach you the tools to be at your best.
